Elementary schools in New York State have been testing Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their classrooms. These schools had previously banned AI use in the classroom but administrators are now experimenting with how Generative AI can be used practically within a classroom setting. They are simultaneously trying to determine what is safe for students and how to create guidelines for using this technology appropriately.
The overall effort represents an important departure from the defensive posture that many school systems took when Generative AI first appeared. School Officials believe it would be more productive to integrate this technology with some safeguards rather than to prohibit access to students who may find ways around these restrictions.
Students remain the central focus for all school-based decisions regarding safety. Educators are creating standards for AI policy and attempting to clearly define what will protect their students. School administrators must also work to foster parents’ trust in the innovative use of Generative AI and other emerging technologies, especially since elementary-aged children are inexperienced with screens and lack the digital literacy of older students.

The efforts of educators in New York reflect a larger national movement toward shifting from reactive policy-making related to AI to proactively establishing framework policies for using it in K-12 education. The transition marks a tangible step from hypothetical uses of AI to real life implementation in classroom settings
