Megaton AI has signed the Open Weights and American AI Leadership letter alongside companies such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, Meta, and OpenAI.

At a time of low trust surrounding the use of hard-earned and hard-built intellectual property in model training, forcing companies to use rails they do not own and weights they do not control stymies AI adoption. It also blocks the innovative potential of American companies that are rightfully suspicious of handing their most prized assets to outside parties.

Our content and media partners, who produce the work we consume and the culture we enjoy, are understandably among the wariest of AI adoption, given that many of the films, books, and shows they produced were absorbed into datasets used to train these models. As a result, open-source models and open weights have become the go-to AI tools for media companies that must balance IP protection with the need to continually innovate in a competitive global landscape.

Without open source and open weights, we risk American media companies opting for lawfare over innovation to stay competitive.

We’re proud to join the organizations supporting an open and competitive American AI ecosystem.
