Connecticut has enacted AI legislation that is intended to provide protection for consumers and workers by requiring companies using artificial intelligence (AI) to be transparent regarding when the AI system makes decisions about employment, or consumer interaction. Senate Bill 5 was enacted into law last week. The bill passed with bi-partisan support. In addition to providing a “regulatory sandbox” for testing AI systems, the bill targets several specific uses such as data privacy and safety protections for minors.
This stands in contrast to the Trump administration's push to regulate AI through federal legislation to prevent a patchwork of state laws that could cause companies and business to sort through multiple rules and jurisdictions as they deploy AI systems in their activities. No word yet on whether the Trump administration plans to sue or face-off against the Connecticut legislature.
