Agentic AI now accounts for 15% of all AI patent activity globally, pulling nearly even with generative AI
Global AI patent grants reached 107,279 in 2025, crossing the 100,000 threshold for the first time and representing an 83% increase over three years, according to IPWatchdog. Agentic AI filings drove much of that growth, rising 59% in a single year, a pace that outstrips the broader category's already rapid expansion.
Generative AI still leads total AI patent activity at 16%, with agentic AI close behind at 15%. That narrow gap means agentic AI could overtake generative AI as the dominant filing category within the next filing cycle if 2025's growth rate holds.
What the shift toward agentic AI suggests
The acceleration in agentic filings reflects where commercial investment has moved. Generative AI, the large language models and image synthesis tools that dominated headlines from 2022 through 2024, produced a wave of foundational patents. Agentic AI involves systems that plan, execute multi-step tasks, and operate with varying degrees of autonomy. It is now generating its own wave as companies race to lock down the architectural and procedural methods that make those systems work reliably.
Patent filings lag R&D spending, typically filed months or years after the initial work begins. The 59% single-year jump suggests the core research push in agentic AI began in earnest around 2023 or 2024, when major labs and enterprise software companies began shipping early agentic products.
The 83% three-year climb in context
The broader 83% increase in total AI grants over three years reflects more than expanded research. Patent offices have become more practiced at examining AI applications, and applicants have refined how they draft filings to survive scrutiny. Both factors inflate grant counts independent of actual research volume.
That caveat applies to the agentic numbers too. Some portion of the 59% surge reflects applicants learning to frame agentic capabilities in patentable terms rather than a 59% increase in genuinely novel inventions. Aggregate grant data alone cannot separate those two effects.

The data does establish that the intellectual property position around autonomous AI systems is consolidating quickly. Companies filing now are staking out methods and architectures that could become foundational to how agentic systems are built across industries.
The 2025 full-year filing data from major patent offices, expected in early 2027, will show whether the agentic surge continued through the second half of 2025 or began to plateau.
